The first toy- A brief history
Toys have been around since the beginning of time. The first toy was likely a piece of wood or stone that was carved into the shape of an animal or person. Over time, toys became more complex, and by the 19th century, they were mass-produced by manufacturers.
One of the most popular toys of the 19th century was the train. The first toy trains were made in Germany in 1812, and they quickly became popular around the world. The first American-made train was produced in 1830 by a man named Isaac Richard.
As technology progressed, so did toys. In 1915, the first Barbie doll was introduced, and in 1966, the first action figure, G.I. Joe, hit store shelves. Today, there are endless possibilities when it comes to toys, and children can choose from dolls, cars, board games, video games, and much more.
The first teddy bear- A love story
The very first teddy bear was created in 1902 by Morris Michtom and his wife, Rose. They owned a candy store in Brooklyn, New York, and they often made toys to display in their shop window. One day, Michtom saw a cartoon in the newspaper of President Theodore Roosevelt hunting bears. He was inspired to make a toy bear for Roosevelt, and he called it “Teddy’s Bear.” The bear was so popular that Michtom mass-produced them and sold them in his store.
The first Barbie- A doll’s journey
In 1959, the first Barbie doll was manufactured by Mattel, Inc. The doll was created by Ruth Handler, who named the doll after her daughter Barbara. The first Barbie was created as a fashion doll and was based on the German adult doll called Bild Lilli. Bild Lilli was a popular comic strip character in West Germany and was created in 1955. Barbie’s physical appearance is often criticized for promoting an unrealistic body image for girls.
The first action figure- A heroic tale
In 1964, the first action figure was created- and his name was G.I. Joe. He was designed as a toy for boys who were interested in adventure and warfare, and he quickly became a bestseller.
G.I. Joe was 12 inches tall, making him the perfect size for kids to play with. He was also very well-designed, with movable joints that allowed him to be posed in a variety of ways. His clothes were also removable, so kids could dress him up in different outfits.
G.I. Joe was an instant hit with kids, and he remains popular to this day. He even has his own movie franchise! If you ever get the chance to see one of the original G.I. Joe action figures, you’ll understand why he’s such an iconic toy.
The first board game- A family favorite
Toy manufacturers have been satisfying the playtime desires of children for centuries. Dolls, balls, action figures, and board games have been popular toys since ancient times. One of the earliest known toys is a board game called Senet. Dating back to 3100 BC, this two-player game originated in Egypt and was found in tombs of early Egyptian rulers. The game was so popular that it remained largely unchanged for over 3,000 years!
Other popular ancient toys include dolls made of clay or wood, small cars and carts fashioned from pieces of pottery, and marbles carved from stone. In medieval Europe, swords and daggers were often given to young boys as playthings. Girls received miniature kitchen sets complete with cooking pots and miniature utensils.
As toy manufacturing has become increasingly industrialized over the past few centuries, the variety and availability of toys has increased dramatically. Today’s children have a seemingly endless array of options to choose from when it comes to playtime. From traditional favorites like dolls and cars to high-tech gadgets and gizmos, there’s a toy out there to suit every child’s taste.

The first stuffed animal- A cherished childhood memory
cherished childhood memory for many people is their first stuffed animal. For some, it was a teddy bear that was given to them at birth. For others, it was a much-loved toy that was passed down from a sibling or parent. But what was the very first stuffed animal ever made?
The first stuffed animals were created in the late 1800s by German companies like Steiff and Märklin. The animals were made out of cloth and filled with sawdust or straw. They were originally intended as decorations for children’s rooms, not as toys to be played with.
