Introduction
In recent years, it has become rarer for a Pixar film not to have a sequel. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. For example, while Toy Story 3 did amazingly well at the box office and was critically acclaimed, Pixar has no plans for a Toy Story 4. So what about Toy Story 5? Is Pixar currently working on another installment in the franchise?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely that there will be a Toy Story 5 anytime soon. In an interview with The Telegraph, John Lasseter (the director of the first two Toy Story films and the chief creative officer of Pixar) said that while he loved making sequels, he didn’t want to overstay his welcome with the franchise. He also said that he didn’t want to make a Toy Story 5 just for the sake of making another Toy Story movie.
So it looks like we probably won’t be seeing Buzz Lightyear and Woody on the big screen again anytime soon. But who knows? Maybe one day in the future Pixar will change its mind and give us all another adventure with our favorite toys.
The Rumors
The rumors about a fifth Toy Story movie have been circulating for years, but nothing has been confirmed by Pixar or Disney. However, there have been some interesting developments that suggest that a fifth movie might be in the works.

The Possibilities

The cognitive scientist and author Louise Barrett wrote in her book The Pscyhology of Animals in Science Fiction that for a fifth Toy Story film to happen, “thestorytellers would need to come up with an idea good enough to rival the first three films.” She adds that it would also have to appeal to both children (the target audience) and adults (who make up a large portion of the franchise’s fanbase).
It’s worth noting that Disney has been reboot-happy as of late. The company has had success with live-action remakes of its animated classics, so it’s possible that instead of making a new Toy Story movie, Disney will opt for a live-action/CGI hybrid remake of the original film. We’ve seen this approach with other recent Disney releases like The Lion King and Aladdin.
The Likelihood
It’s been over a decade since Toy Story 3 hit theaters, and in that time, there have been no shortage of rumors about a fourth installment in the franchise. In Toy Story 3, Andy gives his toys to Bonnie Anderson, a young girl who becomes their new owner. This means that if there were to be a fourth movie, it would have to focus on Bonnie’s toys instead of Andy’s toys.
Another reason why a fourth movie might never happen is because the voice of Woody, Tom Hanks, has said that he doesn’t think there will ever be another Toy Story movie. In an interview with Collider in 2015, Hanks said he doesn’t think there will be another Toy Story because “the [first] three [movies] were enough.”
