The Effects

The effects are not just cosmetic; they are deeply felt. “When you don’t feel seen, when you’re always an outsider looking in, it really takes a toll,” says Dr. Elana Friedman, a clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who specializes in race and identity development. “It can lead to feeling invisible, feeling worthless, feeling like you don’t matter.”

The Costumes

In order to bring the perfectly festive atmosphere to AVMTS, the design team creates costumes that compliment each character and also evoke the feeling of Christmas. Every year, the team pulls out all of the stops to make sure that each and every customer leaves AVMTS feeling merry and bright.

The Production

Toy Story 4 is an upcoming American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It is the sequel to Toy Story 3 (2010) and the fourth installment in the Toy Story franchise. The film is directed by Josh Cooley (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Andrew Stanton and Stephany Folsom; the three also served as executive producers. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Don Rickles, Estelle Harris, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Jeff Pidgeon, Blake Clark, Joan Cusack, Bonnie Hunt, and Keegan-Michael Key will reprise their voice roles from previous entries in the series. Toy Story 4 is scheduled to be released on June 21st in North America.

The story follows Woody as he embarks on a quest to find Bo Peep. Along the way he meets Forky (a spork who has been made into a toy), Duke Caboom (a Canadian stuntman), Gabby Gabby (a defective talking doll), and several other toys.

The film was first announced by Walt Disney Pictures via Twitter on November 6th 2014, with Stanton returning to write the screenplay and John Lasseter returning to direct. However, in July 2017 it was announced that Lasseter had stepped down as director due to personal issues and Cooley would be taking over as director. The film was initially scheduled for release on June 15th 2018 but was pushed back to June 21st 2019 due to production delays. In January 2019 it was announced that Keanu Reeves would be joining the cast as Duke Caboom.

The Legacy

While most know the name Simon Cowell from his time as a judge on American Idol, The X Factor, and America’s Got Talent, not many are familiar with his work in the music industry prior to his television appearances. In fact, Cowell’s first big break came as part of the production team for the 1984 yuletide classic A Very Merry Toy Store.

Cowell served as an associate producer on the film, which starred no less than five future Academy Award nominees: Judi Dench, Robin Williams, Ben Kingsley, Jessica Tandy, and Joan Collins. In addition to its all-star cast, the movie featured memorable songs like “Jingle All the Way” and “Toyland” that have since become holiday classics.

Despite its star power and feel-good Christmas spirit, A Very Merry Toy Store was not a box office success upon its initial release. In fact, it was largely forgotten about until Cowell’s ascension to reality television fame brought it back into the spotlight. In recent years, the movie has developed a cult following among fans of both Cowell and Christmas movies.
